About the job
Location: Cambridge, UK – This role provides flexible working arrangements, primarily remote. Candidates should be based within an easy commuting distance from our office to attend in-person meetings as required.
Are you passionate about collaborating with a team to ensure an engaging gaming experience for players?
As a Gameplay Engineer, you will work closely with game designers to transform concepts and prototypes into fully developed gameplay within Unreal Engine 5. Your daily tasks will involve implementing, refining, and balancing player-facing systems, ensuring they are enjoyable and reliable in a large multiplayer setting. While you will regularly utilize Unreal’s Gameplay Ability System (GAS), your primary focus will be on creating scalable, network-optimized gameplay that allows for quick iterations and long-term upkeep.
Your Responsibilities:
- Develop gameplay features in UE5 using C++ and Blueprints, leveraging GAS (abilities, attributes, effects, cues, tags).
- Design and uphold reusable gameplay frameworks and components that adhere to GAS-first programming patterns.
- Create networked gameplay that accurately replicates actions and feels responsive (including prediction, authority, RPCs, and relevancy).
- Work collaboratively with designers to enhance combat, abilities, and systems while maintaining technical integrity.
Desired Qualifications:
- Extensive experience in gameplay programming using Unreal Engine (UE5) with a strong command of C++ (familiarity with Blueprints for collaboration).
- Deep understanding of multiplayer networking within Unreal: replication, RPCs, authority, relevancy/dormancy, prediction, and client/server debugging.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate directly with designers for fast-paced iterations while ensuring scalable and maintainable implementations.
- Experience in developing and maintaining gameplay systems (including player abilities, combat mechanics, progression, items, and UI gameplay hooks).
- Commitment to high code quality practices (testing mindset, code reviews, documentation, and refactoring).
