About Skip
Skip creates products that help people rediscover the joy of movement. With over 2 billion people worldwide facing mobility challenges due to age, injury, or disability, Skip’s mission is to restore mobility and open new possibilities for movement. The team envisions a future where everyone, regardless of circumstance, can participate in active, joyful experiences, from grandparents keeping up with their grandkids to those with mobility limitations exploring outdoors.
Founded in 2023 after emerging from Google X, Skip is a small startup of 22 people. The company partners with leaders in technical apparel, including Arc’teryx, and is preparing to launch the MO/GO: the first commercially viable wearable robotic device. This launch will also introduce a platform for future Movewear innovations aimed at transforming lives globally.
Role Overview: Innovative Soft Goods Designer
Skip seeks a creative and versatile Soft Goods Designer to join the San Francisco team. This role focuses on designing garments that work seamlessly with the MO/GO wearable robotic device, beginning with a technical pant built for integration. The work centers on functional systems design, where the garment is essential to the overall product experience.
Collaboration is key. The Soft Goods Designer will work closely with mechanical and human factors engineers to ensure fabric, fit, and device function align for the best possible result.
What You Will Do
- Lead the design and technical development of the MO/GO integration pant from initial concept through to production, including pattern making, material selection, fit refinement, and factory handoff.
- Define garment requirements in partnership with mechanical, firmware, and human factors teams. This includes attachment points, range of motion, load paths, and sensor placement.
- Select and qualify advanced fabrics and materials for performance bottoms, such as stretch wovens, knits, softshells, and other innovative textiles that improve user experience.
- Rapidly prototype and iterate physical samples; run fit sessions with both internal and external testers, and incorporate feedback into design updates.
- Oversee the full development process to ensure timely delivery and high-quality outcomes.
