About the Position
We are thrilled to offer research internships in our Tools and Compilers team at Jane Street. We are seeking PhD and master's students with exceptional research backgrounds in programming languages, compilers, verification, and associated fields.
The Compilers team at Jane Street is dedicated to enhancing OCaml as a cornerstone for our expanding technology ecosystem, working closely with the broader OCaml community. Our efforts span various aspects of the compiler, aiming to simplify the process for developers to articulate their concepts in OCaml, augment the efficiency of the generated code, and enhance the usability and speed of the OCaml compiler itself.
Over the years, we have enriched the type system to incorporate innovative language features, rebuilt the optimizer from the ground up, and implemented feedback-directed optimization. We also enhance the surrounding toolchain, developing tools for profiling, debugging, documentation, and build automation. The majority of our work is open-source, and we strive to contribute as much as possible back to the mainstream OCaml compiler.
During the application process, we will collaborate with you to find a project that aligns with your research expertise and interests. Some areas we are keen to explore include:
- Type systems that track locality and uniqueness
- Superoptimization
- Compiler testing and validation
Throughout the internship, you will work closely with your mentors on a specific project for approximately 10-12 weeks. You will learn about our daily use of OCaml, gain insight into the libraries and tools that are fundamental to our internal systems, and better understand the diverse range of challenges we tackle daily. You will have the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and apply cutting-edge research to a large, actively developed production codebase.
Additionally, you will have access to both physical and virtual educational resources, attend guest speaker sessions and social events, and hopefully gain a genuine sense of what it would be like to work with us full-time.
