ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom dedicated to investigative journalism that serves the public interest. As the organization grows, the Human Resources team is expanding to meet new demands.
Role overview
The Human Resources Manager will play a key role in shaping and improving HR systems and processes during a period of rapid growth. This position focuses on both customer service and building effective HR infrastructure. Reporting to the Human Resources Director, the HR Manager works as part of a two-person team supporting over 220 employees, with no direct reports. Collaboration with the HR Coordinator, talent acquisition, finance, and legal teams is central to this role.
This position is based in New York City.
What you will do
- Oversee all aspects of employee benefits programs, including renewals and vendor evaluations.
- Collaborate with finance and HR colleagues to develop and recommend benefits strategies for executive review.
- Lead the open enrollment process and manage year-round staff communications about benefits.
- Conduct market analysis to maintain competitive benefits offerings.
- Ensure compliance with benefits, leave, and compensation regulations in more than 30 states, working closely with legal and HR leadership.
- Support compensation strategy and participate in process improvements and special projects as needed.
- Assist with union-related matters and help implement the collective bargaining agreement under negotiation.
Collaboration and compliance
ProPublica employs staff in over 30 states, including California and New York, with offices in New York City, Washington, D. C., Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, and Berkeley, California. The HR Manager will help ensure compliance with state-specific regulations and partner with the legal department and HR Director on these requirements.
