The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) plays a crucial role in enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for New Yorkers by delivering 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and mitigating air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. As the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, DEP employs nearly 6,000 dedicated professionals. The department's extensive water supply system consists of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes, spanning a 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.New York City is equipped with approximately 150,000 catch basins, 114,000 hydrants, 90,000 valves, 14 gatehouses, 3 reservoirs, 68 groundwater wells, a 100 million gallon underground storage tank, and 7,000 miles each of both sanitary sewers and water mains. The responsibility for maintaining these vast networks is assigned to the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) within DEP.Under the executive guidance of the Chief of Construction Engineering in BWSO's Division of Construction Management, the chosen candidate will assume the role of Deputy Chief of Construction Engineering. In this capacity, you will lead a team of approximately 10 to 15 professionals, including Professional Engineers, in managing contracts related to the installation, repair, and restoration of NYC's water mains and sewers. You will coordinate multiple contracts exceeding $25 million for the construction, extension, replacement, and enhancement of the water and sewer systems. Furthermore, you will establish programs and policies to ensure compliance with DEP standards during contract inspections and emergency repairs, collaborating with other agencies, private utilities, and the public.Additionally, you will provide engineering leadership for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of water mains and sewers, overseeing and advising on inspections, maintenance, and investigations of NYC's Water System. You will support the Chief in managing and operating Construction and Distribution Operations, assisting in the achievement of long-term goals.Note: All candidates must be permanent in the Administrative Project Manager civil service title to be considered for an interview.
