The Program in Medical Education's Office of Student Affairs (OSA) is committed to fostering a supportive atmosphere for students enrolled in the MD program at Harvard Medical School (HMS). The Director of the Medical Student Learning Environment is responsible for managing the intake, assessment, and resolution of concerns related to medical student mistreatment. Acting as a central, neutral resource for students and other members of the PME, this position ensures that reports of medical student mistreatment are handled swiftly, equitably, and with utmost discretion. This role is vital in cultivating a positive, respectful, inclusive, and non-retaliatory educational environment, while also promoting professionalism and accountability through collaboration with program and medical school leadership.
Case Management and Student Response
- Serve as the primary contact for receiving and addressing reports of medical student mistreatment, including issues involving faculty, residents/fellows, staff, peers, or any other factors affecting the learning environment.
- Act as the designated administrator responsible for tracking the status and resolution of student mistreatment reports.
- Provide students with comprehensive information regarding reporting options, institutional processes, supportive measures, and available resources.
- Implement measures to prevent retaliation against students and address any concerns regarding retaliation while communicating institutional non-retaliation policies.
- Refer students to counseling, wellness, academic support, and other necessary resources.
- Conduct and/or coordinate the review of student mistreatment reports in alignment with institutional policies.
- Oversee the monitoring of student mistreatment reports until resolution and ensure appropriate follow-up actions are undertaken.
- Maintain detailed, accurate, and confidential case records and documentation.
- Document case outcomes and follow-up actions to guarantee timely resolution.
- Provide regular reports on the outcomes of mistreatment reports to the HMS student body, faculty, and the HMS Learning Environment Committee.
Policy, Education, and Prevention
- Assist in the development, updating, and implementation of policies concerning student mistreatment and professional conduct, ensuring alignment with other university policies.
- Analyze trends and data related to medical student mistreatment reports, preparing regular summary reports for leadership and accreditation purposes.
- Contribute to educational initiatives for students, faculty, and staff on professional behavior, mistreatment prevention, and reporting mechanisms in partnership with other Harvard and HMS affiliate offices.
- Ensure that students, faculty, and staff are kept regularly informed about student mistreatment policies, reporting mechanisms, and institutional resources.
