Role Overview The Navigation Engineer for State Estimation and Orbit Determination will design, implement, and validate software that determines the position and trajectory of satellites in the constellation. This work is central to maintaining reliable constellation operations. The role covers both onboard real-time estimation and ground-based orbit determination, as well as supporting tools for analysis and validation. Depending on experience, responsibilities may include ownership of specific segments of the estimation stack or contributing to broader development efforts. Areas of focus include process and measurement modeling, filter design, validation, covariance analysis, estimator integrity, statistical validation, replay, and regression infrastructure. This position is based in Mountain View or San Diego. What You Will Do Develop and maintain proprietary C++ libraries for state estimation, orbit determination, and navigation workflows. Create Python tools or bindings to support analysis, testing, automation, and efficient debugging. Implement and validate models for processes and measurements, filtering and smoothing algorithms, covariance propagation, initialization, gating, and related numerical utilities. Integrate data from GNSS, timing sources, maneuvers, telemetry, and external tracking inputs. Build simulation, replay, Monte Carlo, and regression tools to evaluate estimator performance and detect numerical or integration regressions. Assess estimator behavior for consistency, convergence, observability, initialization, and performance under off-nominal scenarios. Work closely with engineers across flight software, GNSS, astrodynamics, timing, and mission operations to define and implement system interfaces.

Develop interfaces for receiver telemetry and external navigation products, including broadcast and precise ephemerides, clocks, biases, atmospheric data, and correction information. Perform data quality screening, timestamp validation, cycle-slip detection, outlier rejection, residual analysis, and diagnostics. Contribute to EKF-based orbit determination and state-estimation pipelines by providing estimator-ready measurements, measurement models, noise models, and health metrics. Your responsibilities will include processing a variety of tracking data, such as GNSS observations and ground station ranges, to accurately reconstruct and forecast satellite ephemerides. This critical work facilitates the seamless scheduling of operations and maintenance across the Logos Space constellations.Key ResponsibilitiesEstimation Architecture: Architect and sustain the ground-based Orbit Determination (OD) pipeline utilizing Extended Kalman Filtering (EKF), Least Squares, or comparable batch estimation frameworks.High-Fidelity Modeling: Develop and implement advanced force models including high-degree gravity fields, solar radiation pressure, atmospheric drag, and third-body perturbations to achieve superior prediction accuracy, along with clock parameter estimation.Data Fusion: Create algorithms to integrate and fuse GPS/GNSS and similar PNT source telemetry with ground-based ranging data, producing robust and precise satellite ephemeris estimates.Calibration & Validation: Regularly perform cross-calibration analyses between ground-truth POD and onboard navigation systems to ensure consistency across the fleet.QualificationsEducation: MS or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Geomatics, or Physics, specializing in Estimation Theory or Astrodynamics.Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in orbit determination for LEO satellites.
