You would be an excellent match if you possess: 7+ years of experience in front-end engineering or design engineering, preferably within a product or design system team. A keen eye for design, demonstrating a strong commitment to layout, motion, usability, and visual refinement. Proficiency in modern front-end technologies, particularly TypeScript, React, component-driven architectures, and accessibility best practices. Experience in building or maintaining design systems, tokens, components, documentation, and governance models. A portfolio that illustrates your UI engineering skills, component thinking, and prototyping expertise. A systems-oriented mindset: you conceptualize in primitives and abstractions rather than one-off solutions. Exceptional communication abilities and the capacity to articulate your rationale while influencing cross-functional teams.

Hex is seeking a passionate and systems-oriented Design Engineer to spearhead the advancement of our innovative product design system, known as Spellbook. This pivotal role is embedded within the Design organization and collaborates closely with Product Engineering to establish a cohesive, scalable, and high-quality user interface foundation.

Your responsibilities will include architecting, implementing, and maintaining the essential building blocks that drive Hex’s product. This encompasses components, tokens, documentation, accessibility standards, and sophisticated interaction patterns. You will partner with designers and engineers to ensure our product experience is crafted with precision, consistency, and sustainable maintainability in mind.

  • Lead the design system. Define the strategic roadmap, establish component standards, enhance system ergonomics, and facilitate contributions across teams. You will be the go-to person for the development of our interface components.
  • Focus on scalability and quality. Transform design patterns into robust, accessible components. Create and sustain tokens, documentation, and tools to guarantee widespread adoption and user-friendliness.
  • Elevate quality through collaboration. Work closely with designers and engineers to enhance UI quality, visual appeal, and consistency across products. This involves advocating for best practices and educating the organization.
  • Prototype and innovate. Develop prototypes to showcase advanced interactions, validate user experience patterns, and guide product direction.
