RequirementsExtensive knowledge of Houdini, especially Houdini Crowds and Agent Definitions (experience with Maya is a plus). Strong creative problem-solving skills with an understanding of both artistic and technical aspects. Solid understanding of animation principles and a keen eye for motion. Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational abilities. Capacity to perform effectively under pressure in a dynamic, deadline-oriented environment. Familiarity with VFX pipelines and workflows across various software platforms. Experience working in Unix/Linux environments. Flexibility and a willingness to adapt to new challenges.

Role overview

The Crowd Technical Director plays a key role in bringing large-scale scenes to life by simulating and animating digital crowds for high-profile visual effects films. Working closely with Supervisors and department Leads, this position shapes the movement and behavior of digital characters, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into complex environments.

Key responsibilities

  • Create and execute crowd simulations as directed by the CG or VFX Supervisor.
  • Develop locomotion and motion behaviors for both realistic and stylized performances.
  • Contribute to the development of new crowd tools and workflows.
  • Maintain clear communication with Production and Leads to meet project deadlines and uphold quality standards.

Collaboration

This role involves close collaboration with Modelling, Rigging, Animation, Motion Capture, and Lighting teams. Both proprietary and commercial software are used to produce simulations that balance realism with artistic direction. The Crowd Technical Director will also have opportunities to help shape new tools and techniques for crowd work.
