Experience working with high school students and families, particularly in urban environments with BIPOC communities. Proactive mindset with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently. Exemplary flexibility, perseverance, and maturity to manage competing priorities effectively. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fostering positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members. Proficient in utilizing data to enhance the college counseling process. Strong digital literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Naviance, and PowerSchool. Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred. At least two years of experience in an urban district or charter school setting.

At Uncommon Schools, our dedicated College Counselors collaborate closely with students and their families to identify the colleges and universities that best align with their aspirations. We focus on ensuring that each student finds a supportive environment that matches their academic interests, community values, and financial needs, ultimately preparing them for success in college and life beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruct 11th and 12th grade college seminar courses, guiding students through every step of the college application journey. This includes career exploration, selecting suitable post-secondary options, crafting personal statements, developing resumes, obtaining letters of recommendation, and navigating financial aid and scholarship applications.
  • Foster a culture of college and career readiness by designing inspiring educational materials, advising on course selections, and organizing events such as Career Day, SAT School Day, Senior Signing Day, College Acceptance Forums, college visits, and Alumni Day.
  • Engage with parents and families to build strong partnerships through informative workshops and one-on-one meetings.
  • Enhance your professional skills by participating in Uncommon Schools' professional development programs and attending regional and national conferences.
  • Forge connections with college admissions offices, advocating tirelessly for your students to streamline the admissions and financial aid processes.
  • Assist in planning and executing college visits and informational sessions for students across all grade levels.
