AECOM is actively looking for a dedicated Civil Engineer to become a vital part of our roadway design team based in Columbia, SC. This team is instrumental in supporting transportation infrastructure projects throughout South Carolina. The ideal candidate should possess a strong enthusiasm for roadway and highway design principles, and a desire to learn about SCDOT design standards while collaborating with seasoned engineers to develop comprehensive roadway plans and deliverables for both state and local projects.
This role presents an exceptional opportunity for practical experience in roadway design, plan production, and involvement in all stages of transportation projects—from initial concept to final construction.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the design and preparation of roadway construction plans, including alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and quantity summaries.
Support senior engineers in the creation of right-of-way (ROW) plans, maintenance of traffic (MOT) layouts, and cost estimates.
Implement SCDOT roadway design standards, manuals, and plan preparation procedures.
Draft and modify plan sheets using MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (or Civil 3D, as applicable).
Conduct basic engineering calculations related to horizontal and vertical geometry, drainage, and pavement design.
Assist in coordinating utilities, SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering), and other design disciplines.
Engage in field reviews, data collection, and coordination meetings with senior engineers and project stakeholders.
Maintain organized project files and documentation in accordance with company and SCDOT QA/QC procedures.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including drainage, traffic, and structures.
Working Conditions & Environment:
This is primarily an office-based position, with occasional field visits or site observations.
Standard 40-hour work week.
