A bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline, emphasizing electrical engineering or power engineering. Experience in delivering projects for transmission system operators such as National Grid, SSE, and SPT, adhering to each operator’s standards. Project experience in overhead line engineering up to 400kV. Demonstrated client relationship management and business development skills. Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.

The Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Engineering team at AECOM offers comprehensive services from conceptual design to Power Systems Analysis, Cabling, Substation design, Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure, System Balancing and Compensation, Protection Systems, SCADA, Communications, Converter Station Design, HVDC Systems, and Interconnectors, including international links.

Your Role:

As a pivotal senior member of our Transmission & Distribution team, you will lead and engage with clients to deliver technically sophisticated overhead line design projects.

Your main responsibility as Principal Overhead Line Engineer will be to provide technical guidance and leadership for overhead lines teams involved in transmission projects, focusing on overhead transmission lines up to 400kV.

  • Deliver technical support and lead the team in the design of overhead lines for complex multi-discipline projects.
  • Utilize your technical expertise to contribute to bids and proposals and represent the company in client meetings as Principal Engineer, applying your extensive experience to a variety of challenging projects.
  • Assume complete responsibility for the project scope and technical execution of overhead line works.
  • Provide expert technical evaluations and problem-solving solutions to team members.
  • Assist in drafting proposals, detailing project timelines, resources, budgets, objectives, and goals.
  • Contribute technical support throughout project implementation, statutory planning, and public consultation events.
  • Oversee design activities associated with overhead lines, including PLS-CADD modelling, line routing, structural analysis and loading trees, developing design criteria, sag-tension calculations, insulator/conductor blowout, swing angle, damper system recommendations, structural spotting, clearance reports, and conductor/insulator selection.
