About the job
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicated to enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for all New Yorkers. We deliver an impressive 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water daily, manage wastewater and stormwater, and actively work to minimize air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. As the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the nation, we proudly employ nearly 6,000 professionals.
Our extensive water supply system features 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes, covering a vast 2,000 square mile watershed that stretches 125 miles north and west of the city. Within the Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC), we currently manage a capital projects portfolio valued at an astounding $35 billion, with an additional $13.6 billion projected in our upcoming 10-year commitment plan. These critical projects enable DEP to continue operating and maintaining a top-tier water supply system.
Our Water System Capital Program (WSCP) plays a vital role in planning, designing, and managing construction efforts to enhance and maintain the critical infrastructure of the Bureau of Water Supply. BEDC is responsible for executing a substantial multibillion-dollar capital program that provides for new infrastructure and the reconstruction of existing assets, ensuring the integrity and high quality of our water supply. This encompasses DEP's extensive network of wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, reservoirs, tunnels, and pumping stations throughout New York City and its watershed.
We are currently seeking a dedicated Assistant Project Manager for the WSCP, located at our Sutton Park office in Valhalla, NY. Under the guidance of an Accountable Manager, the selected candidate will assist in overseeing water and wastewater system projects within the watershed, which includes various infrastructure projects such as dams, aqueducts, wastewater treatment plants, and bridges. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and directing the implementation of design and construction projects in the NYC watershed, ensuring compliance with permit requirements, and resolving project issues effectively. The Assistant Project Manager will also conduct field condition surveys, prepare accurate observational reports, and engage in thorough reviews of contract documents against project requirements to identify deficiencies. Collaboration with the construction management team for project inspections is also a key component of this role.
