About the job

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicated to enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for all New Yorkers. We provide an impressive 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water daily, while managing wastewater and stormwater systems, and actively reducing pollution from air, noise, and hazardous materials. As the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the nation, we proudly employ nearly 6,000 professionals. Our water supply system encompasses 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes, covering a vast 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

Within DEP, the Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) manages a robust portfolio of capital projects valued at $35 billion, with an additional $13.6 billion projected for the next decade. The initiatives undertaken by BEDC are vital for the ongoing operation and maintenance of our exemplary water supply system.

The Water System Capital Program (WSCP) is responsible for the planning, design, construction management, and execution of critical infrastructure upgrades within the Bureau of Water Supply. BEDC is committed to delivering a substantial capital program that supports the development of new infrastructure and the reconstruction of existing facilities to ensure the integrity and high quality of our water supply. This work spans our expansive network of wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, shafts, reservoirs, tunnels, pumping stations, ultraviolet disinfection systems, filtration facilities, and more throughout New York City and its watershed.

We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager for the WSCP, based at our Sutton Park office in Valhalla, NY. Under supervision, the selected candidate will report to an Accountable Manager and assist in overseeing water and wastewater system projects within the watershed. These projects may involve dams, aqueducts, wastewater treatment plants, bridges, roadways, and various other infrastructure tasks. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and directing the design and construction efforts within the NYC watershed, monitoring permit requirements, and assisting in the resolution of project-related issues. The candidate will conduct field condition surveys, prepare detailed reports on physical observations, review contract documents, codes, and regulations to ensure compliance, and actively participate in field investigations to develop effective solutions to meet project objectives. Collaboration with the construction management team is essential for conducting inspections of construction activities.
